Looking for Johnny

When I started the project I didn’t look for an exceptional, spectacular or trendy place but a place where my memories and expectations lay a place I come to after work and where I gather a toolbox for my future travels, a place of every day, so I ended up with a place that could be anywhere in the endless Flemish avaloncity and is somewhere in the lost city of Beringen between Antwerp and Maastricht.

Looking at the Flemish street and the scattered fragments it left behind, I found that architecture in Flanders isn’t about solving problems, a logical product or figures but about individuals and opportunities compacted and constantly remixed in a retro-futuristic grey blur. So revealing my Flemish collectors nature , my love for the early modernistic ambiguity, the streetlaws and hopper at my side I tried to glue the images and fragments into a minimal bubble of time and space a bubble that would capture the fragile everyday and the rumbling beat of the web.

Instead of fixed prejudices and artistic skill patterns and creating opportunities form the basis of this thin open ribbon where every streetsurfer( Johnny) can claim his space. But be real I’d rather end up with an event in an apparently boring stage then stage a scene that eventually is boring, so be minimal. By using basic materials , found backyard fragments and old hits , enhancing contrasts, balancing on the thin line of ambiguity ,twisting, folding, piercing, collating, associating or just gently slowing down the hectic streetrecord I remixed the place , adding a new ambiguous neutral and minimal layer to the existing school, the lost city or rumbling scattered Flemish street ,a layer that compacts , clarifies the continuity, flexibility , vulnerability and beauty of man and his created world A world were he can look for the fatal accident in the daily traffic jam, endless zapping to catch a glimpse of his neighbours , travel on the sensual Latin grooves that fill the backyard lounge or flirt with a frozen picture of a lost friend hidden in the web. A world the child still has to discover and is hidden in our childhood simplifications.
