Designing a small apace is always a difficult task. Since modern homes are increasingly becoming space constrained, contemporary architects and interior planners are stepping up to the challenge of building a comfortable home in an extremely small area. After all, smart design is something which converts both small spaces and big into something equally comfy and stylish.

José Tiago Rosa is one of those young architects who is trying to turn small apartments into trendy dwellings for today’s urbanites. He has already earned respect from his peers and customers for this kind of projects. Today we will see another one of his proposed small apartment designs for prospective homeowners.

Living room

José Tiago Rosa decided to decorate this tiny living room in a minimalist style. He styled it with a cosy grey tone sofa and simple TV cabinet. The far end of the room has been turned into a dining area. The limited availability of space meant that this room could only be decorated in the simplest of fashion.

Until this point, the design seems to be on par with other modern apartments of similar size. However, the way it has been decked out with exposed brick feature walls, warm laminated flooring and trendy lighting fixtures gives it an advantage over many other homes with a minimalist interior.

A closer look at the dining room

Charles and Ray Eames’ designs have been decorating the interior of our homes for more than 50 years now. The architect did not need to think twice before placing a set of famous Charles and Ray Eames chairs in this small dining space. They are placed around a simple table. With its graceful presence, pendant lighting gives the space a decorative feel.

We also get to see the plans for the other end of the living room, designed with wall mounted bookshelves. A small study is tactfully tucked in the corner. The large black and white photograph of the wall is a chic adornment for this minimal living space.

Interior planning

The rest of the apartment can be accessed through sinuous corridors. All-white walls keep the interior unfussy and bright, and helps to make the space look slightly more expansive than it actually is.

Kitchen style

The narrow and oblong kitchen occupies a space opposite to the living room. Decorated in white and pale grey shades as well as laminated flooring, it almost looks like a modern Scandinavian kitchen. It follows a Pullman layout very useful for extremely small kitchens.

Kitchen lighting

In the daytime, the kitchen receives generous amount of sunlight through a large window. Its presence also makes it look slightly more spacious.

When busy preparing delicious dishes, ceiling mounted task lighting can be switched on for better visibility. They are also needed after dusk sets in!

Modern kitchen décor

The variation of the texture is something to take note of. Even when you are designing a monochromatic space, subtle variations like these can introduce a welcome surprise and also offset some of the extra sheen of the glossy cabinet doors or metallic elements.

Designing a small space needs some smart thinking. But, as you can see, it is not something to put you off, especially when you have experts to guide you every step of the way.
