One of the most functional and beautiful parts of any home, bookshelves are entities that are full of ideas and say a lot about their owner. Not only can bookshelves be affordable, but they can also be easy to construct and install in no time.

Built-in bookshelves require a bit more work, but we promise it'll pay off and be something you use for years to come. Here are thirteen of our favourites…

Clean and pure

homify Moderne studeerkamer

This living room is neatly combined with a clean workspace and the separating factor is the bookshelf.  Not only does the bookshelf here act as a wall and block out natural sunlight but it provide a function for the office space and a great design feature for the entire room.

Eccentrically rustic

Forget night stands and bed-side tables – why not add some great built-in bookshelves? For an extra touch, check out the use of raw wood here as the shelving material.

Floor-to-ceiling

This bedroom is eclectic and pretty traditional.  The use of floor-to-ceiling bookshelves is a great use of space for storage including pictures, books and memorabilia.

Something different

This all-white bookshelf is minimalist and incredibly modern and unique. In order for one to accomplish this task – not only would the bookshelf have to be painted entirely white, but the largest step would be taking all of the books in one's home and re-covering and binding them in all-white materials.  A lot of work, yet worth it for the aesthetic value.

A Portuguese home surprise

This rustic and chic Portuguese home includes a wonderful floor-to-ceiling bookshelf that works great with the exposed beams on the ceiling and wide-plank wood floors.

Classic and diversified

Built-in bookshelves don't always have to be only about the books – diversify your shelving system by adding larger rectangular or square areas and cabinets on the bottom for room to hide more private items and family heirlooms.

Modernist

Definitely Bauhaus-inspired, this office space/study is minimalist, if not essentialist in approach.  The inclusion of the room-spanning bookshelf is a great idea and allows the homeowner to avoid storage on the side of the room where the desk is. Note the clear separation of space here!

A reading nook

This Korean home has an absolutely fabulous reading nook. The shelving system goes from the ceiling to the top of the seating area, and the moveable spotlights allow the homeowners to easily highlight the area they're looking at or reading in.

Large-format

Some homeowners don't have too many books – in this case it's counter-productive to have a large shelving system if most of it will remain unoccupied.  It will ruin the balance and symmetry of any room if this is the case. If this sounds like you, opt for larger shelving to hold coffee table books, large-format art books and random decor.

Coloured

Bold, bright and beautiful, this painted bookshelf provides a colourful punch to the room in the best way.  Best part? Paint is rather cheap, so changing the colour would be an easy weekend DIY project!

Symmetrical and dramatic

With beautiful crown molding on the top of this old apartment, the best choice was to add a symmetrical feature – the bookshelves flanking both sides of the historical fireplace.  Floor-to-ceiling bookshelves are always the best and most dramatic choice with high ceilings.

Minimalist and multi-purpose

An all-white exterior and grey sides, this strategically painted shelf is a wonderful and minimalist design in this industrial and rather eclectic kitchen. Mix the colours on your bookshelves for a n extra-special effect.

Made for your space

Don't shy away from constructing bookshelves in oddly-shaped spaces. It is actually these spaces that are best for shelving features as the compartments and measurements can easily be customised!

Whether they're used for books, pictures, memorabilia or random storage, bookshelves are a great and functional design feature in any home. For more tips, find out how to turn your bookshelf into a design feature!
