Building modern extensions to existing structures, particularly those that were built decades ago, poses considerable architectural challenges. But this is not all. This type of renovation has significant aesthetic challenges too. However, as you will shortly see, none of these are insurmountable and building stylish modern extensions to traditional structures is quite possible.

Today, we will share with you a construction story of a stylish modern extension to a 1950’s house. It is located by Herenstraat, close to the centre of Dutch city of Utrecht. The area is full of traditional residential buildings, some of which are over a century old. These old houses are being refurbished according to the needs of their current owners. Join us as we visit the residential premises of this Utrecht home.

Exterior of the house before renovation

This was the exterior of the house before renovation. The façade was attractive, but the prospect was bleak and shabby. Newjoy Concepts was entrusted with the responsibilities of building a fancy modern extension to the existing structure.

Newjoy Concepts is headed by architect Pieter Walraad, who has more than two decades’ experience and considerable local knowledge.

Detailed renovation plan

The extension was to occupy a space of 195 sq metres and enclose one of the corners of the old structure.

The renovation was not limited to solely building an extension, but to make the house more energy efficient as well. The old façade has undergone partial renovation during the course of the project.

Exterior after renovation

This facade looks so much better! Even while standing outside, you can feel the cheerful interior of the newly built kitchen-cum-dining parlour. This extension was instrumental in increasing the size of the living area, making it more habitable and welcoming for the owners of the house.

Zinc-coated external walls of the newly built portion now create a striking contrast with the brick red façade of the old. The contrast in style is also notable. Most importantly, these changes managed to answer the necessities of the present owners of the house.

A view of the interior

Courtesy of the large glass door, the interior receives ample natural light all day long. One of its walls is decorated with a large work of art. Dutch homes have always been famous for their interior décor and Utrecht has been home to many famous artists over the centuries.

We also see this space being decorated with a contemporary dining table and fashionable chairs. Pendant lighting fixtures increase the charm of the dining space with their decorative presence.

When evening sets in

When evening sets in, ceiling mounted deck and interior lighting help to make the space bright and cheerful. The kitchen worktop and cabinets are located at the far end of this room.

A large display cabinet with an old world charm increases the beauty of the interior. The space is also made more comfortable by using a couple of potted plants. There can hardly be any better and more efficient embellishment than this for any space.

Garden

This trip cannot be complete without a visit to the small but beautifully decorated garden. It has been cleaned up, reorganised and upgraded to meet modern standards. Blossoming roses and other plants now adorn the space.

After renovation, all the weeds have been removed and the garden has been properly landscaped. To add further cheer, the garden path has also been reconstructed. A sundeck has been created for the owners and their guests to enjoy this fragrant atmosphere all around them.
