2020 has been a challenging year with people's outlooks altering significantly. The recent pandemic has changed the way we function in pretty much every aspect, so it's no surprise that it's going to influence interior design trends in 2021. Interior design trends are often a direct response to world events which is why it's time to review our existing trends and figure out how we can improve them. The way we design, decorate and use our homes is going to change drastically. Here are some of the interior trends we can expect to see as we move into 2021.

1. Ethnic prints

Ethnic elements in interior design are likely to inspire a quest to make cultural discoveries, inspiring more of them being featured across the house. The use of natural textiles with ornamental motifs or patterns complemented by painted accessories is a great way to infuse tradition into Indian homes. Interior designers and decorators predict that terracotta and clay shades are going to lead in the colour palette of the interiors.

2. Ocean hues

Aqua and inky blues offer a calm, contemporary look that reflects in relaxing poolsides and beach getaways. The year 2021 will see a shift towards tranquil, and modern interiors with Aegean teal, which is a colour associated with peace, calm and comfort. The colour of the year happens to be ocean blues, which are likely to be a key colour trend. Ranging from deep inky tones to soft aquamarine, blue is the perfect colour for creating a tranquil home.

3. Vintage interiors

Antique, repurposed retro pieces fit perfectly in a vintage scheme. The key is to recreate the look using intense colours, and furniture, cohesively bound in a vibrant aesthetic. Contrasting colours are ideal for a vintage look – ensure that depth is created by layering multiple pieces over time. The simple addition of rich fabric and statement lighting helps to create a modern tone.

4. Cheerful colours

Being amid the pandemic has resulted in things being uncertain and bleak. The last thing we wish for is that our homes should reflect the current state of affairs, especially now that we're spending more time indoors. The year 2021 will see a shift from dull shades of grey to peppy bright shades such as yellow, ochres and mustard. These hues offer a cheerful cosiness that brightens up the interiors like never before.

5. House plants

House plants have never been more in fashion than they are right now. They can be featured in the house in several ways – from retro hanging creepers to beautiful blooms. There's a style out there for every home! Having plants indoors freshens the air, bringing in colour and vibrancy into a home while filtering out pollutants.

6. Ceiling design

Enhancing the ceiling plane can be considered to be a decorative interior trend in the year 2021. Geometric patterns and ornamental motifs are going to be the main accent in the room. This technique can be exercised in the bedroom, living room or dining room. Incidentally, the proper design of geometric lines in a single composition beckons a sense of peace.

7. Natural textures

Strong textures, such as rustic wood that depicts grain and natural stone, are going to be the next most significant trend. Embracing authentic natural materials and moving away from materials such as marble and porcelain is likely to be the norm. Natural textures such as wool, linen, wood and stone are the next best thing – the exact opposite of the digital screen at which we spend hours staring!
