Winter is here and is here to stay for a couple of months. While we wait eagerly for winters after the long spell of harsh summers, we also start hunting for ideas to keep the house warm. Now if the warmth comes with saving of a few bucks, it will be an added perk. So today we have come up with simple doable tips that will keep your house warm without burning a hole in your pocket. Have a look!

1. Welcome the warmth of sunlight to warm up the home

We all love to bask in the warmth of winter sun. Isn’t it? Even in winters sun is warm and cozy. So fold up the blinds, open up the curtains and let the natural warmth of sun warm up your home. Even if no one is home during day, leave the curtains open and make way for sunlight to warm up the home so that you return to a cozy and comfortable home. If sunlight doesn’t reaches as certain part of the home, don’t open the curtains there. However, just remember to open the curtain, only and not the windows or else cold winter air will make the home colder.

2. Trap the heat inside the home by closing the curtains on sundown

On sundown remember to cover up the windows and trap the heat inside. If you leave in hills or mountains or the northern and eastern part of India which have relatively colder climate during winters you can opt for insulated curtains especially made for winters. Or you may even think of covering the windows and doors from outside with rugs or thick curtains to retain the heat inside.

3. Keep the room heater away from furniture and furnishing to warm up home fast

It’s human tendency… to move near the source of heat to become warm as soon as possible. However, by keeping the heater near the furniture or furnishing is reducing its efficiency to heat fast. Keep it away from any obstacles or furniture and furnishing that can absorb its heat. This will make way for hot air near the heater to circulate freely thus making the room warmer fast.

4. Upgrade your heating system to warm the home economically

Technology changes frequently and with time it is getting better and better. If your heating system is more than 10 years old, it is time to upgrade and change the old one. Obviously the new one will have better features and be efficient too. Definitely it is better and more energy efficient that will warm up your home by consuming less energy, thus saving on money and energy.  

5. Set the timer of thermostat right to warm up the home

If your home has a central heating system or thermostat to control the heating system, set the temperature and timer right to save electricity. The human body is more comfortable at 24-25 degree Celsius and the electronic gadget will consume less energy at these temperatures. Also set the timer such that the heating system gets on half-an-hour before you wake up. Switch off the heating system when no one is home. Set the timer half-an-hour before the family is back so that everyone returns to a warm home.
