There's nothing quite like the feeling of stepping into an empty new home filled with potential, and imagining what it's going to look like fully furnished. There are so many different approaches you can take, each one resulting in a completely different atmosphere for your home, so it's up to you to realise your personal vision to create a home that reflects your own character and intention. For this reason it can also feel a little bit overwhelming, but don't worry because today we're going to guide you through the process!

While there's no hard and fast rules for the layout of your house, or how you choose to furnish it, there are some basics that every home shares in common; a bed in the bedroom, a sofa in the living room, and so on. That's why today we're going to help you through the basic stages of furnishing your home, so that you can be sure you haven't forgotten anything essential.

1. Planning

The first thing you need to do is plan exactly what you need. If you have a large budget you don't need to worry too much, as you can buy complete sets that meet your needs and the job is done. If you need to be more careful with your budget however there's a little more work involved, but don't let it get you down, it's actually a fantastic opportunity to plan a unique and personal decor.

First measure up your room, then make a list of the furniture you want to include, and make a rough estimate of how large each of those pieces can be before you head out shopping, that way you won't end up with a cramped and awkward space.

2. Essential furniture for the bedroom

Obviously every bedroom needs a bed, so that should be the first piece you organise. Choose a bed based on comfort first, and decor second, because as important as it is for your room to look good, it's far more important that you get a good night's sleep. Once the bed has been chosen you'll know exactly how much space you have left in the room for other furniture.

The only other completely essential piece of furniture is a closet. Ideally you will have one built into the room, but otherwise try to get a multifunctional piece with as much storage as possible.

Once the bed and closet are out the way you can decide how much space you have for additional furniture like seats, desks, and bedside tables, just don't try to fit too much in!

3. For the living room

In the living room your number one priority is to create a seating area that facilitates conversation, with a coffee table to place your drinks. Start with a large sofa, although how large is entirely up to how much space you have, and then introduce smaller seats. If you spend a lot of time watching television, then you're going to want to set the TV up as the focal point of the room with the sofas arranged around it, otherwise arrange the seats so that they are facing each other with the coffee table in the middle to create a warm social environment.

Assuming you have good lighting and don't require additional lamps, the rest of the furnishing in the living room is completely optional. A console table is great for decorations, but your living room won't suffer dramatically if there's no room for one.

4. The kitchen

Most kitchens come fully equipped, unless you're moving into a brand new home or you've built the house yourself. Furnishing a kitchen is a complicated job, and most kitchens feature custom cabinetry built to purpose. The first thing you'll need to do is hire a kitchen planner to help you design your perfect kitchen. Then you'll need a carpenter to take those plans and turn them into reality. The main things to include are essential appliances like a refrigerator, sink, and stove, and then as much storage as you can possibly fit!

5. The bathroom

Like the kitchen, most homes come with fully equipped bathrooms, and if that's not the case you will need the aid of professionals, namely a reliable plumber. The main requirements for the bathroom are a toilet and bathroom sink, and then it's up to you to choose whether you prefer baths or showers, but if you have the space we recommend including both!

6. For the rest of the home

The rest of the furnishing will depend on what kind of layout your home has. If you have a home office you'll require a desk and ergonomic chair, if you have an entranceway you'll want a hat rack and console table, and if you've got a laundry you may need another sink, but one thing you'll always need are shelves. It's generally a good idea to install as many shelves as possible, regardless of the room, as you'll always find you need more surface space for storage and decorations.

7. Who do I call to help?

Unless you're really an expert you're going to want some help along the way. Your best bet is to get an interior decorator on board to help you choose furniture that will match the theme and style of your decor, as well as offering advice along the way. Any custom furniture will require a carpenter, while electricians and plumbers will be needed for the kitchen and bathroom.

While it's important to get the aid of professionals, don't forget this is your home, so always be sure to communicate your own personal vision to ensure you end up with the home of your dreams! For some ideas on different themes for the living room check this article out!
