The kitchen is the beating heart of every home. It should be a source of warmth and comfort, filled with the aroma of coffee in the morning, and beautiful home cooked meals in the evening. Unfortunately the modern housing situation often finds floor plans severely limited in size, meaning we can't always have the spacious kitchens we dream of. But with clever planning, and a compact design, you can still have a stylish and highly functional kitchen, so that you never have to feel like you're making a compromise.

In this article we're going to look at five unique solutions, including where your kitchen sits in the floor plan and how it interacts with the rest of the space, to ensure that your kitchen gives you all the space you need, and perhaps more importantly that it looks great. So join us as we look at the innovative work of our homify experts!

1. A kitchen for cooking and dining

The kitchen is often a gathering place, where people come together to cook and eat, and this fun concept house takes that idea further. The kitchen counter leads into the dining room table in one single flat surface, clearing floor space to make the room look bigger. On the far wall we see an open shelf that removes the need for a large cabinet that would impose on the compact space. This also allows us to see all of the interesting things that usually fill the cupboards, adding an interesting design feature that catches the eye and adds a living element to the kitchen. We also love the quirky art work featured on the front of the counter!

2. An open space with a sense of unity

In the Niigata Prefecture of Japan, the design firm Dwarf has designed this modern marvel. With the sink and stove on a compact island that also features a fish grill, and plenty of storage, it really has everything you need in a single unit. This harmonious design features a heavy wooden countertop that reflects the bold beams of the ceiling and the hardwood floors, and black cabinets that match the light fixtures and the window frames, for a unified theme that ties the whole room together. This way they have opened up the entire space, so that the kitchen feels spacious, not to mention very modern and stylish!

3. A kitchen that's front and centre

Here is a simple floor plan for a small one bedroom apartment. Generally kitchens are placed at the end of a house, or tucked away in a corner, but the designers of this kitchen have placed it right in the centre, and we think the gambit has paid off handsomely. With a tidy appearance that makes the most of the space, this compact kitchen features a dining table pushed against the counter, a great way not to clog up the area, and perfect for an intimate meal. We can see splashes of colour throughout this kitchen, from the light fixture to the seat of the chairs, that perfectly complement the bold feature wall on the left. With one side of the kitchen leading to the bathroom, and the other leading to the bedroom, complete with a small work station, this is a fabulous example of a trendy and highly functional tiny apartment.

4. A cool theme

Sometimes the problem with limited space is that we squeeze in too many ideas and materials, and end up with a cluttered look. Far more impactful is to choose a single theme, here a cool bluish grey contrasted by natural woodgrain, to ensure your kitchen looks fashionable and sophisticated. The woodgrain and those gorgeous faucets really complement the antique mixer and the mason jars on the shelf, resulting in a classic look with a modern sensibility.

5. Minimalist style

Minimalism was born from modern circumstances, so it's no surprise how effective it is in a small area. The success of this narrow kitchen alley is due to its simple design, which widens the space, with the white surfaces keeping the kitchen light and airy. The only patterns we see here are on the floor tiles, adding a touch of style without overwhelming the compact room, with the colours reflected in the wooden counter and the rattan blinds. Every centimetre has been considered and calculated, allowing a perfect fit for the larger appliances like the oven and refrigerator.

We hope these kitchens have given you some ideas for your own apartment. We've got a ton of other great ideas for planning a small kitchen right here!
