The garden presents a conundrum for most city dwellers these days, we all know how much it makes a home, and yet it's increasingly difficult to find a property with an outdoor area. So how do we benefit from the calming and cleansing effect of plant life in a high-rise apartment? With indoor plant arrangements! And don't worry, there are tonnes of different things you can do to fill your home with the aroma of fresh herbs and flowers, and the lush green scenery you desire.

As indoor plant arrangements become increasingly popular innovation has been on the rise, and here at homify we love to track the progress of some of the world's top interior landscapers and designers. With hanging plants, wall mounted self irrigating pots, as well as some special surprises, these plant arrangements expand the possibilities for indoor gardening, and more importantly they look great.

So let's look at some great examples of indoor arrangements to inspire you to fill your own home with living, breathing plants.

1. An indoor garden

This cutting edge approach to interior architecture blends the indoors with the outdoors for a truly distinctive home. Instead of relying on potted plants, the designers have opted to go for an entire indoor garden, complete with mid-size trees, bark planters, and a special use of woodgrain to tie the aesthetic together. Impressive to say the least.

2. A cute little corner

And here's a much smaller version of the same idea that we think is just as effective. Generally we treat plants as an impermanent addition to our home with a few cut flowers thrown in a vase, but by repurposing a small unused corner of the house these designers have built a miniature world of succulents that looks like a forgotten tropical island. Plus that aloe vera will come in handy, with its myriad therapeutic uses.

3. The secret garden

This magnificent arrangement follows the more is more mantra, and rightly so. With a combination of climbing vines, hanging plants, and pots covering every possible surface this is another example of design that blurs the line between indoors and outdoors, and just looks fabulous. The orange features add a great splash of colour, and work sublimely with the natural greens.

4. A bold statement

This home is clearly the work of people passionate about plants and what they bring to the home, because every design aspect seems catered to indoor gardening. Starting with an understated trio of potted plants, we then upsize to an indoor planter containing white gravel that separates off the living room. But the most impressive piece of all? A full size tree in the stairwell. Just wow. This is a great use of the height available, and as soon as the shock of seeing it wears off you can't help but wonder; why hasn't this been done before?

5. An autumnal array

This adorable display is straight out of a fairy tale. With soft browns, purples, and pinks nestled amongst succulents, this is a low maintenance display that infuses its antique style with a breath of living colour. We love the little medicine bottles and the stack of books, unifying the theme and bringing the whole thing together.

6. A hybrid creation

Okay so technically this one is outdoors, except that it's inside the house, and has its own door. This is a very interesting solution for those of us without a backyard, and creates a unique centrepiece unlike anything we've ever seen. The tiny room/display case doesn't actually have a ceiling, allowing unfiltered natural sunlight to pour in, with the glass walls serving to both display the tree, and protect the rest of the home from the weather.

7. From trash to treasure

Recycling isn't just about throwing your trash in different coloured bins, it's about finding new uses for things you would otherwise just throw away. Bottles and jars are great containers for flowers, and this cute crate just completes the look. Urban style with a country twist.

8. Subtle but plentiful

This is a great idea to bring freshness into any room; put plants everywhere. In the pantry, on the walls, hanging from the ceiling, literally anywhere there is still an open space in your home, put a plant there. This may seem like reckless advice, but just look at how this room beams with colour and life. We promise you, you will never regret adding more plants!

9. Innovative wall planters

Here's that innovation I was talking about. These planters are both space efficient, and practical, allowing for maximum greenery, with no spillage or waste. The subtle use of hanging plants, irregular spacing, and the unique shapes of the planters put this display in a class of its own, and it would suit any room in the house.

10. Stairs lined in flowers

Stairs are defined by function and their potential as a design element is usually completely ignored, but these quaint flower pots really liven up the home. The white baskets match the flower arrangement and ensure that your steps won't be covered in soil, and the levels create a sense of density, allowing for even more flowers, just how we like it.

11. A garden for a dining room

One of the main benefits of plants is that they naturally purify the air, so we think it's a great idea to fit in as many as you can! This dining room has been styled more like a botanical garden, and we love them for it. With a full wall of greenery you would think they might have stopped there, but by filling the table with plants as well it truly immerses diners in nature

We hope these indoor arrangements have you excited to get creative in your own home! For more unique design ideas, check out this article on what you can do with the roof of your home!
