The rise of work and study from home has pushed the need for creative solutions to the timeless problem of space, and how to best utilise it.

Just because you only have a small space doesn't mean you have to accept minor ideas – there's lots you can do with just a little room. See the below example from Worsley Woodworking in Ipswich, UK, who built a remarkable custom desk and storage area for a client in Cambridge with limited space.

Beyond custom creative solutions, there is always something you can do with everyday desks to make the most of your work environment. I've included a couple of minimalist examples to consider because sometimes the simplest solution is also the best solution.

A healthy working environment doesn't have to mean big open spaces and tranquil scenery; there are just a few best practices to follow. Below we'll look at examples of people who are doing some interesting things for their home office setups with limited space.

Here we see the classic in action. These days, all you really need is a hard surface, a laptop, a little light and maybe a cup of tea or coffee.

Decorate your desk with a little green to help relax your mind. A good source of natural light is always recommended if you have the chance to be near a window. Finally, add a lamp and a book or two to finalise that classic workspace look and feel.

There's no such thing as a silly place for a desk, outside of your bathroom, that is.

The folks over at Ardesia Design found a creative solution to having less space by putting a customised desk beneath a staircase. It's an elegant and effective use of space. They finished it off with a lamp that complements the colours and minimalism of the whole setup.

What's on your wall?

In this small office space, we can see a good use of hanging wall art. The primary monitor is underneath the bigger frame and the smaller laptop is beneath the smaller frame. Simple, really. The two frames are staggered to match the mismatched heights of the monitors which give the desk area a satisfying symmetry.

Hanging a poster in a frame is one of the most cost effective and elegant ways to improve the aestheics of your working area.

This beautiful wooden room is ideal for a quick escape from your normal home office area. We've all been there. Sometimes all you need is to work away from your regular desk for an hour or two; and if you're lucky enough you might even have a space as beautiful as this to do it in.

It can be nice to have multiple spots to work from, so look around and see where you can go. Maybe you have a patio or dining room table? Anywhere with a chair and surface will do.

If nothing else seems to work with the room you have available to you then – don't fret! – Just keep it simple. Here minimalism is the name of the game. Have you checked outside on the kerb or on ebay? Grab any old desk, a computer, a chair and get going.

Tip: Be careful when deciding where to place your monitor, as if the screen is facing a window it will be subjected to glare at some point throughout the day.

Remember, all you need is a desk and an idea.

Here are some more ideas for small home office spaces.
