One of the oldest designs in the collection is the Softlamp for Droog Design. It has turned out to be a timeless design, which is still very much in production even after 20 years. Only the light source that is provided has changed over time: from tradition lightbulb, to a more energy-efficient version, to an even more energy-efficient LED lamp. In his search for forgotten techniques in the middle of the 90’s, Arian came in contact with a dip molder. It turned that the technique was only being used at the time for technical components. The Softlamp was the first product being made with this technique for the interior design market. Thanks to its glossy exterior, the lamp has a ceramic quality, but it is soft and supple to the touch. The electricity cord seems to flow naturally into the socket and then towards the shade. By using a special dipping paste, it was possible to create a warm colored translucency. This was a new – and beautiful quality of the dipping material, which later proved a great advantage when it softened the (usually) cold and harsh light of energy-efficient and LED lamps in the Softlamp.

The Softlamp has been included in the collections of various museums, including the NewYork Moma, the San Fransisco Moma and the Centraal Museum Utrecht.
