Our clients wanted to enlarge their home as their family started to grow. We were asked to design extra storage space and a bedroom, which could be divided into two in the future. With a large, free space on the roof, the design evolved into a spacious roof extension.

The envelope of the extension is specified by the sightlines defined by municipal building regulations. This allowed the extension to be placed in the middle of the roof, creating a very light interior with two terraces, one on each side. One terrace becomes a space for friends and family, the other is more intimate. The zinc cladding was inspired by the rawness of the existing gable, with the built-in spotlights providing warmth to the evenings outside. Inside, at the top of the stairs there’s a large hallway, which is not only a circulation space, but a room for a large custom made storage element as well as the entrance the laundry and a WC. The storage unit is made out of birch plywood with a painted interior to accentuate it. In the future, the angled shelves can be removed allow space for the second bedroom’s door. The terraces are accessible from the corridor without having to enter the bedroom.
