KVA was commissioned to develop a concept design for an Eco-Farm. The building plot is situated on a very pretty location along river De Vecht outside of Amsterdam in Breukelen. Due to the condition of the existing buildings currently standing on the plot, it is proposed that they will be demolished except for the historic façade and the two monumental bunkers.

Using historical references, and considering the cyclical nature of farming and production, a courtyard typology was determined to be the best solution for the site. The form itself is very strong and the buildings are organized in a clear and compact way, which guarantees a high functionality for farming. Since everything that will be produced on the land will be sold in the shop, the eco-farm should sell an experience to the customer. The courtyard allows for that, it can become a unique intimate outdoor space providing all kinds of activities. Cuts in the buildings were then created to form a connection between courtyard, the architecture, the historic bunkers and the landscape.

The program provides a number of opportunities and challenges regarding privacy, building typology, and the scale of the site. Buildings that have a more public nature have been proposed as glass and timber structures, making them transparent and inviting for the public. The more private functions, such as the slaughterhouse, have been proposed to be brick. Each function determines the typology of the building, though through common materials, similar heights, and roof direction, the buildings are united and form a courtyard that provides functional outdoor spaces and program. In that sense, the architectural concepts of the individual buildings reinforce the ideas behind the urban plan.
