The task at hand in this project was to create a sense of space, despite the limited floor area of this one-person apartment, by using the plenty inclining daylight. Therefore the internal walls at the entrance hall and the internal wall that divided the living room from the bedroom were removed. For thermal and acoustic reasons sliding doors were installed to create flexible room dividers, but the apartment is basically one space.

A custom-made piece of furniture in the middle of the main space hides the bed while enabling daylight to penetrate through the open frame into the apartment. The steel frames stretch from the ground up until they almost touch the ceiling. In the upper part the open shelves display personal objects. Below the custom-poured polyester top, the piece of furniture becomes more closed. Two volumes constructed from birch plywood are hung in the lower part of the frame providing storage and a drawer for dj gear. The dimensions and fragmentation of this eye-catcher that is dictated by the steel frames gives the whole a light appearance in the space.

Also the visible parts of the kitchen are custom-made: the concrete top and the painted plywood fronts form a contrast with the larch flooring. The steel suspension of the open kitchen cabinet is also made of steel profiles with plywood shelves.
