Home Extension Westervoort, Kumiki Kumiki

The design for this project was made for a special client. The woman of this couple is disabled and this extension will provide a bedroom with a bathroom at ground level. To connect the extension with the living area and to create space for an access, the garage is shortened and the new volume is attached along its rear wall. With a subtile connection to the existing house and a different materialisation, the new structure becomes an autonomous object in the garden.

With a setback of the wide glass facade, the corner of the extension is emphasised whereby the structure adapts to the environment and the relation between the living area and the bedroom is ensured. The staggered form create space for the wardrobe on the inside, and a veranda on the outside that the couple desired. From a frontal perspective the depth of the form is underlined by the oblique interior wall and the inclining panels of the veranda that also allow the morning sun to fall through the glass.

A rhythm of vertical larch planks cover the timer framework while the timber panels of the veranda are part of the white interior. The bathroom is adapted for the disabled woman with a seating shower for instance. Obviously there are no obstacles like thresholds, the sliding door runs very smoothly and the ventilation window opens automatically.
